Course Description/Agenda

Learn about electronic typefaces as used in ads, magazines, and the Web. You will become familiar with the language and art of typography in order to communicate and design more professionally. You'll also learn how to install, manage, and troubleshoot fonts on your desktop publishing computer.

Designers, graphic artists, and talented but informally trained marketing and communications staff members who've been given a project to design and produce for print or Web publication.

An interest in learning more about type. Learning or knowing Illustrator or a desktop publishing software, such as InDesign, will allow you make the most of what you learn about type.

ObjectivesAt the end of the training, successful participants will be able to
  • Distinguish between typing and typesetting
  • Identify elements that contribute to good type design
  • Avoid the top 10 common errors in typesetting
  • Acquire a list of typeface pairing suggestions
  • Address readability considerations
  • Describe the major electronic typeface formats, including PostScript Type 1, TrueType, and Open Type fonts on Mac OS X
  • Receive a checklist of cautions about using these formats
  • Identify font management software on Windows and Mac OS X
  • Prepare and gather fonts for service bureaus
  • Explain when and why to embed Fonts in PDF files
