Course Description/Agenda

Effective and Practical Therapies for Dual Diagnosis through Applied Research

Co-occurring mental health conditions and substance use disorders affect nearly 14 million Americans each year. In fact, up to 65.5% of people with a substance dependence disorder had at least one mental disorder, and 51% of people with a mental disorder had at least one substance abuse disorder. However, despite a vast amount of research in the fields of substance abuse and mental health to address the needs of those with co-occurring disorders, issues still remain with regard to the successful assessment and treatment of these disorders. Thus, a majority of the dually diagnosed consumers never receive therapies that effectively treat their co-morbid conditions and thus do not recover to experience an improved quality of life.

This one-day seminar will address the confusion in co-occurring disorders terminology and provide an overview of promising studies and current research treatment that providers can utilize to better assess and treat these individuals. The course will also provide a comprehensive look at best practices and many evidenced-based approaches for treating individuals with co-occurring disorders. An essential look at advancing attendees' knowledge in ways to assist with the coordination of services throughout systems is also a central theme of the course in order to provide realistic and practical knowledge that can be used in practice right away. Take home new tools, techniques, knowledge and strategies for working more effectively in these complex cases and giving your dually diagnosed clients the help they so desperately need.

  • • Review current research on the epidemiology and prevalence rates of co-occurring disorders in the United States
  • • Discover readily-implemented best practices and evidence-based treatment approaches for dually diagnosed consumers
  • • Recognize the barriers to successful treatment and learn tactics for overcoming them
  • • Apply and tailor appropriate treatment considerations for diverse populations
  • • Implement effective treatment programs through comprehensive assessment, coordination of services and strong aftercare support

  • • Identify issues with assessing and diagnosing clients with anxiety, mood and psychotic disorders
  • • Discover best practices and evidence-based approaches treatment providers can implement at their facilities
  • • Describe the specialized treatment considerations necessary for diverse populations
  • • Demonstrate how the mental health and substance abuse treatment systems can collaborate to provide seamless treatment options for consumers
