Establish treatment programs that jump-start the communication process in communicatively delayed children, strengthen the parent-child bond and teach parents to persevere through structured play with resistant children
Course Description/Agenda
Delays in development, including those associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder, auditory processing deficits and motor speech disorders (apraxia), have a profound impact on parent-child interaction. Families often wait helplessly as they are told not to worry about "minor" delays. Floundering in failed attempts to interact, parents become either overindulgent or withdraw from the unfulfilling task of engaging with a non-responsive child. Therapists and teachers are equally lost in their efforts to effectively deal with parental grief.
This one-day course will examine parent-child interaction and provide videotaped interviews of parents reflecting on the impact of a developmental disability. Participants will learn how to establish treatment programs that jump-start the communication process in communicatively-delayed children, strengthen parent-child interaction and teach parents to persevere through structured play with resistant children. Videotaped illustrations of parents engaged in a small group training program with their children will be provided.
Therapists, educators and other professionals working in early intervention will heighten their personal insight into parental struggles and will acquire skills for more effective treatment of children with communication deficits.
