Deep Tissue Massage: Safe and Effective Techniques for Common Problem Areas Seminar

This Seminar is also available On-Site for groups of 20 or more.

Assess the injured or problematic area in order to provide effective deep tissue massage, focusing on applications to the neck, upper and lower back, and upper and lower extremities. Perform manual techniques while identifying safe body mechanics.

Course Description/Agenda

It is estimated that one in four Americans suffers from some form of musculoskeletal dysfunction. The areas most commonly affected are the upper and lower back, neck, and upper and lower extremities. Contributing factors include work injury, personal injury, home and vehicular accidents, sports and aging. Deep tissue massage techniques can greatly benefit sufferers of chronic pain and injury. However, there is a general misunderstanding of the concept of deep tissue massage from the perspectives of the patient/client and the therapist. Deep tissue massage can injure both the client and the therapist if not performed appropriately.

Participants in this one-day seminar will learn what deep tissue massage really means so that you can evaluate each client and condition to determine its appropriateness. You will examine the anatomy of common injuries, assess safety considerations for both the client and yourself and establish protocols to determine proper duration of treatment. Participants will perform deep tissue massage techniques on the upper and lower back, neck, and upper and lower extremities in a hands-on lab. You will develop manual techniques using the thumb, fingers, fist, elbow and forearm and discover mechanical aids for performance of deep tissue massage. The hands-on experience gained in this seminar will help attendees provide safer, more effective deep tissue therapy beginning the very next day.

  • Examine the anatomy of common injury areas that can benefit from deep tissue massage
  • Discover indications and contraindications for DTM
  • Conduct a thorough evaluation, including palpation of affected area, to determine muscles/joints that need attention
  • Incorporate proper body mechanics to ensure safety for both you and your clients
  • Define deep tissue massage and determine when its use is appropriate
  • Evaluate the affected area to determine the proper muscles to work
  • Perform manual deep tissue massage techniques to the neck, upper and lower back, and upper and lower extremities
  • Identify mechanical tools that are useful in administering DTM
