Learn training techniques utilized in strength and conditioning programs and gain an understanding of specific exercises and correlate them to target specific areas of weakness
Course Description/Agenda
Lack of strength and range of motion are common deficits seen in physical therapy clients. A popular intervention would be the use of therapeutic exercise to address these deficits. However, given the time constraints of staffing shortages and visitation limits from insurance companies, it is more critical than ever that our clients are able to receive maximum benefit in minimal time. While rehab professionals are well versed in therapeutic exercise, they often are not fully aware of training principles and techniques that may benefit their clients and promote a faster recovery.
In this one-day seminar, participants will learn training techniques utilized in strength and conditioning programs that could be an advantage to use with patients. In addition, the learner will gain an understanding of specific exercises and correlate them to target specific areas of weakness. Functional anatomy will be reviewed for primary muscle groups to promote a better understanding of the exercise technique rationale. Principles of periodization, negative training, failure and rest-pause will all be introduced. Finally, discussion will be provided on how to modify strength exercise for certain populations and their diagnoses. Attendees will leave this seminar with ideas and techniques that they can use on their patients in the clinic the very next day.
- Discuss and correlate functional anatomy with common exercises for strength/motor control of the upper and lower body
- Demonstrate and enhance knowledge of strength training and specific strength training principles, including: giant sets, super-sets, strength-duration curve and negative training
- Identify how strength training principles can serve to optimize exercise results with limited time
- Identify and explain the consequences of improper technique with referenced exercises
- Review considerations for the arthritic, diabetic, adolescent and older adult populations
