Understanding & Troubleshooting Hydraulics On-Site Training

This on-site training class is also available as Public Schedule Seminar.

A 2-Day Training Course for Everyday Building, Plant & Facility Maintenance

Course Description/Agenda

Being able to operate, maintain, and troubleshoot your own hydraulic equipment and systems starts with simply understanding how and why all the various components work. That is what this hydraulics maintenance course is all about. We will provide you the basic building blocks and information you need to become proficient in working with industrial hydraulics and fluid power, whether a small mobile unit or large industrial installation. This course is perfect for multi-craft technicians needing to understand basic hydraulics to the skilled fluid power technicians who just need a solid refresher. And because we know time is money, this seminar is designed to have immediate impact so that you can start saving maintenance dollars on costly repairs and service calls today! Students attending this course are expected to go back to their workplace and immediately apply what they have learned.

Intended Audience

This hydraulic seminar is a must for anyone who is involved with fluid power maintenance at industrial plants, utilities or commercial and private building facilities. Attendees come from a wide variety of industries, skill-levels, company sizes, and job titles, so if youre not sure youll fit in or will benefit from the class, dont worry - you will, as long as you have an interest in learning about hydraulics! People who will benefit from attending this seminar include

All maintenance personnel in:

  • Manufacturing Plants
  • Commercial Buildings
  • Utilities
  • Wastewater Facilities
  • Mining
  • Government Buildings
  • Oil Refineries
  • Construction
  • Airports

Including:

  • Mechanics
  • Fluid Power Technicians
  • Machine Operators
  • Plant & Facility Managers
  • Building Engineers
  • Pipefitters
  • Multi-craft & Cross Training Personnel
  • GSE Maintenance Technicians
  • Any person needing a basic course in Basic Hydraulics!

What You Will Learn

Upon completion of this course students will receive a training certificate indicating that the student has learned:

  1. Identify hydraulic components by their schematic symbols
  2. Understand the applications of both primary and auxiliary components
  3. Select the correct valves, motors and actuators to obtain desired results
  4. Design simple hydraulic circuits using schematics
  5. Diagnose and avoid common system & component problems
  6. Understand the differences between mobile and industrial hydraulics
  7. Determine applications for, install and charging of an accumulator
  8. Select, size, seal and route hydraulic pipes and hoses
  9. Control heat, filtration and contamination in hydraulic systems
  10. Work with hydraulic fluids and components in a safe and environmentally friendly manner
  11. Properly test and inspect hydraulic systems
  12. Diagnose system versus component problems
  13. Evaluate the cause and effect of changing or re-sizing system components

Workshop Agenda

DISCUSSION TOPICS - DAY 1

Hydraulic Systems & Components: What They Are and How They Work

This course begins with an overview of hydraulic principles and progresses through hydraulic system components including pumps, valves, cylinders, motors, rotary actuators, accumulators and filters with emphasis placed on component structure and the identification of the components by the proper symbol as standardized by ANSI and ISO.

Methods of instruction include lecture, discussion, audio-visual material including PowerPoint presentation, and lab exercises with real world hydraulic components. Discussion topics include:

  • Hydraulic Principles
  • Positive-Displacement Pumps
  • Flow Control Valves
  • Directional Control Valves
  • Check Valves
  • Hydraulic Cylinders
  • Hydraulic Motors
  • Hydraulic Rotary Actuators
  • Pressure Control Valves
  • Pilot Operated Pressure Control Valves
  • Accumulators
  • Fluid Conductors
  • Reservoirs, Heat Exchangers and Filters

DISCUSSION TOPICS - DAY 2

Troubleshooting: How to Identify and Fix Common Problems

During Day 1, students gain a basic "working knowledge" of industrial hydraulic components and their function within an operational system. This course builds on that knowledge and is designed to help the student become aware of the decision making process that is part of a good troubleshooting procedure.

The instructor focuses the class on the hydraulic troubleshooting process and the inspection and testing tasks that are part of a systematic approach to locating malfunctions and their underlying causes. The lab exercises require the students to troubleshoot real world system problems. Discussion topics include:

  • Application of Hydraulics
  • Troubleshooting
  • Hydraulic Safety
  • Basic Troubleshooting Requirements
  • Generalization on Hydraulic Troubleshooting
  • Noisy and Cavitating Pumps
  • No System Pressure
  • Low or Erratic System Pressure
  • No Movement of Actuator
  • Slow or Erratic Actuator
  • System Running Hot
  • Common Cylinder Problems
  • Solenoid Failure
  • Internal and External Leaking Control
  • Troubleshooting Hydrostatic Transmission
